Blue Zoo is the animation studio behind HexVets and Magic Pets, produced for Nickelodeon.
In HexVets and Magic Pets, kid witches Annette and Clarion are thrilled to become HexVet apprentices to the kind, clever, and sometimes cheeky Dr. Talon. At her clinic, they learn how to heal and care for magical creatures while picking up some important social-emotional lessons themselves. Annette and Clarion are unlikely friends who couldn’t be more different - she’s all drive, and he leads with his heart - but through their comical adventures, they find they’re stronger together.
Crafted to bridge the gap between preschool and pre-teen audiences, the show weaves a delicate narrative of acceptance and personal growth with mesmerizing visual artistry. Using an innovative "2.5D" animation style, our team married stylized 3D craft with bespoke 2D facial hand-crafting, custom color grading, and painterly lighting, creating a living, breathing storybook world across more than 1,500 spellbinding assets.
Behind the scenes, conjuring a world of this scale was an extraordinary feat of artistic wizardry. What began as a plan for 60 characters quickly blossomed into a sprawling menagerie of over 240 unique assets, requiring a clever modular design system to keep every creature distinct yet unified. From crafting 164,000 storyboarding panels and over 7,000 shots across a feature-length pilot special, to experimenting with genre-bending moments like a film noir-inspired interrogation sequence, our team poured passion into every single frame to craft a universe that feels truly boundless.
